A Routine Trip Turns Into a Fight for Survival

What began as a standard day of fishing for Junior Apiuta Apiuta turned into a harrowing eight-day battle for survival in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. On June 11, Apiuta set out from his home on Pukapuka, a remote atoll located approximately 1,140 kilometers northwest of Rarotonga. After a relaxing afternoon of volleyball, the 42-year-old fisherman prepared his gear and headed into the open sea, following the flight of birds—a traditional sign that fish were abundant in the area.

However, the tranquility was short-lived. As darkness descended, Apiuta's four-meter aluminium skiff began to experience mechanical failure. The engine started to "cough" and splutter before eventually cutting out completely. Stranded without the tools necessary for repairs and facing rising winds, Apiuta watched as the lights of Pukapuka faded into the horizon, leaving him alone in one of the most isolated regions of the planet.

Battling the Elements: Cold, Hunger, and Isolation

For the next week, Apiuta faced a relentless onslaught of environmental challenges. He described towering waves, some significantly higher than his small boat, that slammed into the skiff from both sides. On two separate occasions, the sheer force of the swells threw him directly into the ocean, threatening to pull him into the depths.

Survival became a matter of extreme resourcefulness. With very limited supplies, Apiuta relied on a meager kit consisting of:

• Two bottles of water
• A bucket for collecting rainwater
• Basic fishing gear
• A chilly bin (cooler) and a single sheet for warmth

To stave off starvation, he consumed small pieces of raw fish caught using his gear. To combat the biting cold and constant rain, he huddled beneath his sheet and used the chilly bin as a makeshift shield against the elements. "Night-time, I couldn't do anything. I was freezing out there," he recalled.

The Power of Hope and the Moment of Rescue

Throughout the ordeal, Apiuta attributed his mental fortitude to his unwavering faith. Despite the loneliness and the physical toll of bailing water to keep the boat afloat, he refused to succumb to despair. "I didn’t lose hope. I just felt sad," he stated, noting that he spent much of his time in prayer, asking for a sign of rescue.

This hope was tested on the third day when Apiuta spotted the lights of a distant fishing vessel. He paddled with all his might toward the light, but the unrelenting wind pushed his skiff away, and the vessel eventually vanished from sight.

Rescue finally arrived on the eighth day. The skies cleared, and the drone of an aircraft became audible. A New Zealand Air Force Poseidon plane spotted the lone fisherman and alerted nearby shipping lanes. Shortly after, a Taiwanese fishing vessel responded to the coordinates. Apiuta whistled frantically to catch the crew's attention; once a torch light illuminated his boat, the long nightmare finally ended.

A New Lease on Life and Lessons Learned

Upon being rescued, Apiuta's first priority was contacting his partner, telling her simply, "Darling, I’m okay." After being transported to New Zealand for recovery, he expressed his intention to return to the sea, though with a newfound commitment to safety.

Reflecting on the experience, Apiuta offers a stark warning to other fishers about the unpredictability of the Pacific: "Don’t forget about your torch, life jacket. Don’t forget the raincoat. Say your prayer before you start going fishing."
