Square Enix Ignites Fresh Backlash by Deepening Dragon Quest Partnership with Google AI

Square Enix is once again at the center of a heated controversy within the gaming community, as it further integrates generative AI into the iconic Dragon Quest franchise. Despite widespread criticism from fans earlier this year regarding the use of technology in its beloved RPG series, the Japanese publisher has announced a new initiative, 'Gemini Quest', in collaboration with Google.

The 'Gemini Quest' Initiative

Set to launch on July 30 in Tokyo, the 'Gemini Quest' event leverages Google's Gemini AI to create an interactive, augmented reality experience. Attendees are invited to use the Gemini application to scan barcodes throughout several Tokyo districts. This process generates magical spells in AR, which players can then use to defeat monsters and challenge the Dragon Lord. Successful participants are rewarded with exclusive mini-medals featuring legendary creatures from the series. While the technical ambition is clear, the implementation has left many longtime followers uneasy.

A Pattern of Contentious Integration

The latest announcement follows a string of controversial decisions regarding the direction of the Dragon Quest brand. In May, the unveiling of 'Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams' drew mixed reactions from the community. Earlier, in March, the introduction of 'Oshaberi Slimey'—a character in Dragon Quest 10 powered by Google’s generative AI and designed to serve as an AI companion for players—sparked intense debate over the role of automation in traditional gaming experiences.

Fan Backlash and Future Concerns

Social media platforms have been flooded with negative feedback from players who feel that AI integration clashes with the soul of the franchise. Comments range from simple expressions of discomfort to pointed demands that the development team redirect its resources toward finishing major titles like Dragon Quest 12 instead of focusing on AI-based promotional gimmicks. As Square Enix continues to pursue these tech-heavy partnerships, the core fanbase remains skeptical about the future of the series, questioning whether these innovations add value or merely serve as divisive marketing tools.
