Sandfall Interactive Addresses Potential 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' Nintendo Switch 2 Port
Sandfall Interactive discusses the technical challenges of bringing their RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 console.

The gaming community is buzzing with speculation regarding the possibility of seeing the highly anticipated RPG 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. During a recent event hosted by Epic Games in Yokohama, the developers at French studio Sandfall Interactive addressed these hopes while highlighting the significant technical hurdles involved.
The Challenge of Bringing High-Fidelity RPGs to Nintendo Hardware
Since the reveal of 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33', players have expressed a strong desire for a portable version of the title. However, the studio is tempering expectations. Guillaume Broche, the game's director, confirmed that while the team is actively exploring ways to make a port viable, it is currently too early to make any formal announcements.
Technical Director Tom Guillermin provided further insight into the complexities of the project. He noted that because the team prioritized a high-fidelity visual experience, bringing such a demanding game to a platform with lower technical specifications than the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X represents a 'huge technical challenge' for a studio of their size.
Unreal Engine 5: Opportunities and Limitations
'Clair Obscur' is built on the robust Unreal Engine 5, an engine that has allowed the small team at Sandfall to produce production values rivaling much larger AAA studios. The developers praised the engine's versatility, including the use of Blueprints for efficient scripting and access to vast asset libraries.
However, the transition to the next-generation Nintendo console is not straightforward. The developers pointed out that specific cutting-edge graphical features, such as 'Lumen Lite,' are not natively compatible with the hardware architecture of the upcoming Nintendo console. The team plans to monitor future updates to Unreal Engine 5 to determine if they can bridge this gap. For now, the studio remains focused on delivering the best possible experience on their currently announced platforms before committing to the demanding process of hardware optimization for the new system.
