Cyberpunk 2077 and Edgerunners Hit Apex Legends in Divisive New Crossover

The worlds of CD Projekt RED are colliding once again with Respawn Entertainment's hit battle royale, Apex Legends. Following a well-received crossover with Wuthering Waves earlier this summer, the latest collaboration brings the gritty aesthetic of Cyberpunk 2077 and the acclaimed anime series Edgerunners into the high-octane arena of Apex. Running from July 14 to August 18, 2026, the event introduces a suite of thematic content, yet the reception has been notably polarized.

A Night City Takeover in the Arena

This limited-time event attempts to transplant the neon-soaked atmosphere of Night City into the gameplay loop of Apex Legends. Players can acquire various cosmetic skins inspired by iconic characters, including David Martinez (modeled after Sparrow), Lucy (Axle), Rebecca (Rampart), Royce (Gibraltar), Lizzy Wizzy (Ash), and the corporate-linked Panam (Loba). Additionally, the event features weapon reskins, most notably the 'Skippy' smart pistol applied to the Alternator, complete with its signature talkative AI, and the introduction of lore-accurate abilities like the 'Sandevistan' and 'Blackwall' powers.

Why Fans Are Split

Despite the ambition of the project, the community response has been lukewarm at best. While many players appreciate the mechanical integration of iconic gadgets, a significant portion of the fanbase has taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction regarding the visual design. Critics have labeled the new character skins as 'hideous,' arguing that they fail to capture the artistic nuance of the original source material.

Furthermore, many fans are questioning the selection of featured characters. The absence of legendary figures like Johnny Silverhand or the protagonist V has left a sour taste for many dedicated fans of the franchise, who view the current lineup as a missed opportunity to fully honor the depth of the Cyberpunk universe. As fans look forward to the upcoming Edgerunners 2 on Netflix and the eventual successor to the original 2077 title, this collaboration serves as a reminder that bringing such a distinct aesthetic to a different engine is a delicate balancing act that rarely pleases everyone.
