Qatar Mourns the Passing of Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Qatar has bid a solemn farewell to its visionary leader, the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away at the age of 74. Following his death, which was announced on Sunday morning, the nation observed a dignified and simple Islamic funeral at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha.

A Legacy of Transformation

Sheikh Hamad, who steered Qatar from 1995 to 2013, is widely credited with architecting the nation's rapid modernization. Under his stewardship, Qatar underwent an unprecedented economic metamorphosis, with its gross domestic product surging more than 24-fold. By leveraging the country's vast natural gas reserves, he positioned Qatar as the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2006, fundamentally altering the trajectory of the nation’s wealth and international standing.

Global Influence and Vision

Beyond economic prosperity, Sheikh Hamad was instrumental in expanding Qatar’s geopolitical influence. His administration emphasized diplomatic mediation, helping the country play a pivotal role in global conflict resolution, including ongoing dialogue between the United States and Iran.

He was also the driving force behind the launch of Al Jazeera in 1996. The network grew from a regional experiment into one of the world's most influential media voices, championing the concept of free press in a region where such platforms were previously unheard of. In the words of the network’s director general, Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani, the Emir 'planted the first seed' of an institution that became a 'beacon of truth.'

A Humble Departure

In line with his character, the burial ceremony held at the Lusail Cemetery was understated and focused on faith rather than grandeur. Close family members, including his son and current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, paid their final respects during the procession.

Academics reflect on his tenure as one that redefined Qatar as an 'extraordinary country.' His legacy is cemented not just by the infrastructure and wealth he generated, but by his bold decision in 2013 to abdicate in favor of his son, marking a rare and peaceful transfer of power in the Gulf region that ensured continuity and stability for the next generation of Qatari leadership.
