Potensic Atom 3 Review: A Solid Starter Drone, But DJI Still Reigns Supreme
Is the Potensic Atom 3 the best beginner drone? We test its features against DJI alternatives to see if it's worth your investment.

As drone technology becomes more accessible, the competition in the entry-level market has heated up significantly. The Potensic Atom 3 has recently entered the scene as a compelling contender for beginners, boasting impressive hardware specifications that on paper, rival some of the heavy hitters. However, after rigorous testing, it becomes clear that while it is an excellent starter machine, it falls just short of being the definitive choice in a landscape dominated by DJI.
The Allure of the Potensic Atom 3
During my two weeks of testing, the Potensic Atom 3 proved itself to be a sturdy, high-quality piece of hardware. The inclusion of a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor allows for 4K video recording at 60fps and the capture of 50MP RAW images—a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the Atom 2. Furthermore, the new RC PTD2 controller with its bright, 900-nit 5.5-inch touchscreen offers a fantastic, smartphone-free flight experience. Its battery life is also stellar, reaching up to 40 minutes with the standard smart battery and 50 minutes with the Plus version.
Why the Lack of Safety Tech Matters
Despite these hardware wins, the Atom 3 is held back by the absence of obstacle avoidance. In the current market, this is a glaring omission for a drone in this price bracket. Competing models from DJI, such as the DJI Flip, offer front-facing obstacle detection, providing a level of safety and peace of mind that the Atom 3 simply lacks. Additionally, while the Potensic attempts to use AI to bolster its low-light performance, the results are often over-processed and suffer from excessive motion blur compared to the more natural, refined output found on comparable DJI hardware.
The Case for DJI Alternatives
If you are a beginner looking for the best possible start, I would strongly recommend opting for a DJI model instead. The DJI Mini 5 Pro, for instance, sets the standard with omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, forward-facing LiDAR, and a 1-inch sensor that truly excels in low-light conditions. For those on a tighter budget, the DJI Neo 2 remains the king of the sub-premium market, offering 4K/60fps video, excellent obstacle sensing, and intuitive gesture controls. Even the DJI Flip, available at a similar price point to the Atom 3, provides that crucial extra layer of safety through its obstacle avoidance systems.
Final Verdict
The Potensic Atom 3 is undeniably a 4-star product that is great for casual flying. It is robust, easy to operate, and captures beautiful footage in ideal conditions. But for those who prioritize safety, reliability, and superior performance in challenging light, the current DJI lineup remains the superior investment.
