Is Google Maps Filling Your Phone Storage? Here Is How to Reclaim It

Google Maps is a foundational tool for modern navigation, but it often operates as a silent storage hog. If you are struggling with a "storage full" notification on your iPhone or Android device, the culprit might be hidden in the depths of your mapping app. Because users often install the app once and never interact with its settings, data can accumulate over time, eating up gigabytes of valuable space.

The Three Hidden Storage Culprits

There are three primary areas where Google Maps quietly stores data that can bloat your storage:

  1. Offline Maps: Many users download maps for travel, but these files can be massive, especially when saving entire states or regions. Over time, these files remain on your device even if you no longer need them.
  2. Location Timeline History: Google recently transitioned users to a new Timeline experience, which stores your historical location data locally on your device rather than exclusively in the cloud. Depending on your movement patterns, this can take up hundreds of megabytes.
  3. Accumulated Cache: Every search, navigation route, map tile, and business page you view creates cache data. While this is meant to speed up performance, it can become corrupted or simply grow too large when not properly maintained.

How to Reclaim Your Storage Space

Follow these steps to clean up your device and free up space:

1. Managing Offline Maps

Open the Google Maps app and tap your profile icon. Navigate to "Offline Maps." Here, you can view all downloaded areas and their file sizes. Delete any maps you no longer require. Additionally, turn off "Auto-update offline maps" and "Auto-download recommended maps" within the settings to prevent new files from building up in the background.

2. Clearing Location Timeline Data

Within the app, go to your profile icon and select "Your Timeline." If you wish to keep your history, ensure you back it up using the cloud icon first. If you no longer need this data, you can delete it to clear significant space, depending on how long you have been using the feature.

3. Wiping the Hidden Cache

If the above steps aren't enough, it is time to clear the cache:

  • On iPhone: Navigate to Settings, then "About & Terms," and select "Clear Application Data." This will reset cookies, cache, and remove local offline map files.
  • On Android: Go to your device's main Settings menu, tap on "Apps" or "Application Manager," find Google Maps, tap on "Storage," and select "Clear Cache." You can also select "Clear Data" if needed.

After clearing your cache and data, perform a quick restart of your phone. You should immediately notice that Google Maps occupies significantly less space, giving you more room for photos, videos, and other essential apps.
