Iraq Recovers 375kg of Gold in Massive Anti-Corruption Sweep

In a significant escalation of its national anti-corruption initiative, Iraqi authorities have successfully recovered 375 kilograms of gold linked to the high-profile case of Adnan Al-Jumaili, the former Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs. The seizure, which represents a major victory for the current administration, underscores the depth of illicit wealth accumulation within the nation's former bureaucratic circles.

A Coordinated Judicial Operation

Judge Dhia Jafar of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court confirmed that the recovery was the result of a complex, multi-agency operation. Of the total amount, 358kg was secured through a collaborative effort involving Kurdistan regional authorities, while a further 17kg was seized during a separate, parallel probe. The recovered assets have been transferred to the Central Bank of Iraq’s Issue and Treasury Department for safeguarding.

The Al-Jumaili Investigation

The ongoing investigation into Al-Jumaili, who was detained in May and formally dismissed on June 2, has exposed a staggering scale of state resource exploitation. Government figures reveal that the misappropriated assets linked to his case alone exceed 127 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $96 million), alongside $24 million in cash, various real estate holdings, luxury vehicles, and extensive gold reserves. Recent reports also highlighted the discovery of 14 billion dinars hidden within a rainwater drainage pit, illustrating the clandestine methods used to conceal illicit gains.

Operation Dawn: A New Era of Accountability

This recovery falls under 'Operation Dawn,' a broad government initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi to dismantle corrupt networks and reclaim stolen public funds. Government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi emphasized that the campaign operates without regard for the political status of suspects, stating that the public mandate is to restore integrity to state finances.

Beyond domestic seizures, the Iraqi Integrity Commission is actively pursuing international cooperation to repatriate smuggled assets and has issued 'red notices' for suspects residing abroad, signaling a firm commitment to long-term judicial accountability.
