The public beta for macOS 27, codenamed macOS Golden Gate, has officially arrived, bringing a significant wave of Apple Intelligence features to the desktop. After spending a month with the developer build, it is clear that while this isn't a radical OS overhaul, it succeeds in making the Mac experience more personalized, efficient, and streamlined.

Enhanced Siri AI Capabilities

The standout addition is the dedicated Siri AI application. Unlike previous iterations of Siri, this new version functions similarly to contemporary LLM-powered chatbots. Accessible via the Dock, Menu bar, or Spotlight, the app allows for natural language queries and complex tasks. Notably, it is baked into the OS: users can trigger actions like 'add to calendar' directly from text conversations or system notifications. While third-party integrations, such as deep support for Gmail, are still in early stages, the system-level integration makes it surprisingly useful for managing daily workflows.

Visual Refinements and Liquid Glass

Apple has addressed user feedback regarding its 'Liquid Glass' UI. A new opacity slider allows users to fine-tune the interface's transparency. Furthermore, Apple has increased the diffusion of background visuals, significantly improving text readability. Icons now feature more pronounced edges, and uniform corner radiuses across application windows provide a more cohesive, polished aesthetic.

Spatial Reframing for Photos

Capitalizing on the hype from WWDC 2026, the new Spatial Reframing tool is now available. Using AI, this tool allows users to adjust the perspective and framing of existing photos after they have been taken. The AI impressively fills in gaps created by perspective shifts, making it a powerful utility for those looking to salvage or perfect their shots without needing professional editing skills.

Compatibility

Apple continues its push toward a fully custom-silicon ecosystem. macOS Golden Gate is exclusive to Apple silicon Macs, meaning Intel-based machines are no longer supported. The update runs on all Apple silicon MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro models released from 2020 onwards.

The Outlook

While Apple Intelligence initially faced skepticism, the implementation in macOS Golden Gate marks a turning point. It feels intentional, helpful, and integrated. With further refinements expected before the final fall release, it appears that Apple is moving in the right direction for the future of desktop computing.
