Rise to Power
Khalil al-Hayya, born in the Gaza Strip in 1960 and a veteran member of Hamas since its inception in 1987, was previously a key member of the five-person leadership council established to steer the group during the ongoing conflict. His prominence within the movement surged following a series of major leadership losses throughout 2024, including the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, military commander Mohammed Deif, and eventually Yahya Sinwar.

Al-Hayya’s personal life has been deeply affected by the ongoing hostilities. During the 2014 conflict, an Israeli strike resulted in the deaths of his eldest son, Osama, his daughter-in-law, and their three children. The cycle of tragedy continued in September 2025, when an Israeli airstrike on a residential complex in Doha claimed the life of his son, Humam. These events underscore the high personal stakes for those in the upper echelons of the Palestinian militant organization.
