Who is Ismail Elfath? Meet the Referee Set to Officiate the England vs. Argentina World Cup Semifinal

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its climactic final stages, the spotlight is turning toward the man tasked with managing one of the most anticipated matches in tournament history. Moroccan-American referee Ismail Elfath has been appointed to officiate the high-stakes semifinal clash between England and Argentina at Atlanta Stadium this Wednesday.

A Meteoric Rise on the World Stage

At 44 years old, Elfath has become a pillar of officiating excellence. This upcoming semifinal appearance marks his fourth match of the 2026 tournament, following a string of high-profile assignments, including the group-stage thriller between Japan and the Netherlands, Spain’s narrow victory over Uruguay, and Norway’s historic round-of-16 upset against Brazil. His selection for the semifinal reflects FIFA’s confidence in his steady hand and decision-making capabilities during intense matches.

From Morocco to the American Dream

Elfath’s journey is as compelling as the matches he officiates. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he moved to the United States in 2001 at the age of 17 via the US Diversity Visa Program. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, he eventually became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Currently based in Austin, Texas, he balances a background in IT sales with his rigorous career as an elite match official.

An Accidental Career Path

Surprisingly, Elfath’s path to the whistle began on the pitch. As a former striker for the amateur side Austin Lightning, he found himself frequently frustrated by officiating decisions. His vocal critiques of referees eventually led to a challenge from a league official: to try refereeing himself. Embracing the challenge, he transitioned from local youth and high school games to becoming a professional in Major League Soccer (MLS) by 2012. He has since been honored as the MLS Referee of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2022.

Breaking Barriers and Shaping History

Elfath made headlines in 2016 when he oversaw the first-ever on-field Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review in history during a USL match. By 2022, he achieved the pinnacle of his career by officiating at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Describing himself as a 'triple minority'—an immigrant, a person of African descent, and a Muslim—Elfath has become an inspirational figure for aspiring officials worldwide, proving that success on the global stage is attainable through perseverance.

The Semifinal Officiating Crew

For the England vs. Argentina match, Elfath will be supported by an experienced team, including fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins as assistant referees. The officiating team is rounded out by Italian official Maurizio Mariani as the fourth official and his compatriot Daniele Bindoni as the reserve assistant. As the world watches in anticipation, all eyes will be on Elfath to ensure the game remains a fair, disciplined, and spectacular display of football excellence.
