Tragedy for JRPG Fans: Nacon Officially Shuts Down Midgar Studio, Leaving 'Edge of Memories' in Limbo

A Sudden End for a Creative Vision

The gaming industry continues to face a turbulent era marked by instability and restructuring. In a devastating blow to the indie JRPG scene, Nacon has officially confirmed the closure of Midgar Studio, the Montpellier-based development team known for blending French creativity with Japanese gaming sensibilities. The news comes as a shock to fans who were eagerly awaiting the studio's next ambitious project.

The announcement was made via a heartfelt post on LinkedIn by Jérémy Zeler-Maury, the founder of Midgar Studio. Zeler-Maury expressed his deep regret, revealing that despite exhaustive efforts to find a buyer or a strategic partner to save the company, the court has officially ordered the liquidation of the studio.

Eighteen Years of Passion and Innovation

Founded in 2008, Midgar Studio was born from a "wild idea" to create games that bridged the gap between Western and Eastern design philosophies. Over nearly two decades, the studio carved out a unique niche in the industry, producing titles that prioritized art and atmospheric storytelling.

The studio's legacy is defined by two primary releases:
Hover: Revolt of Gamers (2017/2018): A high-energy title reminiscent of Jet Set Radio, which found its way onto PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Edge of Eternity (2021/2022): A classic turn-based JRPG that garnered praise for its world-building and combat mechanics, cementing Midgar's reputation as a capable developer of deep, systemic experiences.

In his farewell message, Zeler-Maury praised his team, stating that the studio was more than just a business—it was a collective of talented individuals who transformed a vision into reality over 18 years of hard work.

The Fate of 'Edge of Memories'

The most pressing concern for the community is the status of Edge of Memories. Positioned as the spiritual successor to Edge of Eternity, the game was highly anticipated and slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Currently, the future of the project is shrouded in uncertainty. Nacon has not provided a clear roadmap regarding whether the game will be finished by a different studio or if the project will be scrapped entirely along with the studio's closure. Given Nacon's own reported financial difficulties, the possibility of a total cancellation looms large, though fans hold onto hope that the project's progress can be salvaged.

A Warning Sign for the Industry

The closure of Midgar Studio is not an isolated incident. From mass layoffs at giant publishers like Xbox and PlayStation to the collapse of smaller independent outfits, the industry is currently grappling with a post-pandemic correction. The loss of a specialized studio like Midgar highlights the vulnerability of "mid-sized" developers who lack the massive cushioning of a first-party publisher.

As the doors close in Montpellier, Zeler-Maury has urged the industry to look toward the displaced talent of his team, emphasizing that while the company is gone, the experience and value of its collaborators remain intact.
