Madness and Greed: id Software Devastated by Massive Xbox Layoffs
Xbox's restructuring leads to a 'bloodbath' at id Software, with over 73% of the DOOM creators laid off, resulting in a massive loss of technical expertise.

A Brutal Restructuring at Microsoft
The gaming industry is currently weathering a storm of corporate restructuring, and Xbox has recently become the epicenter of a devastating wave of job cuts. While Microsoft previously hinted at a 'reset' of its operational strategy, the reality on the ground has been described by former employees as a 'bloodbath.' The company's aggressive cost-cutting measures, spearheaded by executives like Asha Sharma, are now impacting some of the most prestigious names in gaming history.
While Microsoft avoided the total closure of studios in this specific phase, the internal slashing has been severe. Reports indicate that over 3,200 positions are expected to be eliminated throughout the 2027 fiscal year, with 1,600 cuts occurring almost immediately. Following the blow dealt to Obsidian Entertainment, it is now the legendary id Software—the architects of the DOOM franchise—that has been gutted.
The Gutting of id Software
According to data revealed by Video Games Chronicle, the impact on id Software has been catastrophic. Out of a total workforce of 185 employees, a staggering 136 people were laid off. This includes 96 staff members based at the Texas headquarters and 40 remote workers. In percentage terms, Microsoft has eliminated roughly 73.5% of the studio's staff, effectively stripping the team of its core strength and institutional knowledge.
The timing of these cuts is particularly jarring, as it coincides with the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations, a DLC project that required over a year of intense development and countless hours of unpaid overtime from the staff.
'Decades of Knowledge Erased': Developers Speak Out
The emotional fallout from these layoffs has been visceral. Derek Best, a VFX artist with twelve years of service at id Software, took to LinkedIn to express his shock and bitterness. Best highlighted a critical loss of technical capability, noting that the VFX team has been reduced to a single artist, leaving the studio without a project lead or producer for that department.
Most concerning is the loss of specialized technical expertise. Best revealed that every developer proficient in Houdini—a critical software for procedural modeling and cached animations—was terminated. This means that much of the foundational work performed on DOOM: The Dark Ages using this software may now be effectively lost, as there is no one left in the studio capable of continuing or maintaining that specific pipeline.
Another former employee, Todd Boyce, described the situation as a manifestation of "corporate madness and ignoble greed." Boyce slammed the company for its total disregard for the developers who sacrificed their personal time to meet deadlines, calling the timing and the methodology of the layoffs "insulting" to the id Software brand.
The Future of the DOOM Franchise
The scale of these cuts has left the remaining skeleton crew in a state of uncertainty. One former employee told GamesBeat that while they anticipated some fluctuations, no one expected a massacre of this magnitude. The transition of id Software from a leading-edge development powerhouse to what some describe as a "support studio" raises serious questions about Microsoft's long-term vision for the franchise.
As the industry watches, the tragedy at id Software serves as a stark reminder of the volatility within the current AAA gaming landscape, where creative brilliance is often secondary to corporate balance sheets.
