BMW has officially unveiled the all-new iX5, marking a monumental shift in the model's 27-year history. As the first-ever battery-electric version of its flagship SUV, the iX5 is a centerpiece of BMW's 'Neue Klasse' strategy, blending traditional luxury with cutting-edge electrified performance.
Modern Design and Aerodynamics
The new iX5 presents a bolder, more athletic stance that cleverly disguises its substantial size. Central to this redesign are the 'Iconic Glow' kidney grilles, which have been narrowed and positioned vertically to create a more aggressive frontal profile. These are paired with sleek, integrated 'double-X' lighting clusters that house daytime running lights, turn signals, and low beams in a single, cohesive unit. Flush-mounted Winglet door handles and an optional luxury automatic door system add to the clean, aerodynamic aesthetic.
Performance and Range
Built on BMW's advanced Gen6 platform, the iX5 features a robust 800V architecture and a massive 144 kWh cell-to-pack battery. This setup provides an impressive estimated range of 435 miles on a single charge. With a total output of 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft-lbs of torque, the iX5 is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Charging is equally efficient, with support for 460 kW DC fast charging, allowing for a 10-to-80 percent charge in approximately 22 minutes. Notably, the vehicle also includes full bidirectional, vehicle-to-home power capabilities.
The Interior Revolution
The cabin moves away from the traditional, bulky dashboard displays seen in other luxury vehicles. Instead, the driver is greeted by a 17.9-inch touchscreen tilted ergonomically for ease of use. A secondary 'Panoramic Vision' display stretches across the base of the windshield, providing critical navigation and driving data in the driver's natural line of sight. While BMW has removed most physical buttons in favor of clean touch controls, the system remains highly responsive.
Enhanced Passenger Experience
A standout feature is the optional 14.6-inch front-passenger display, which provides independent access to streaming services, video conferencing, and gaming. To ensure safety, the system utilizes an internal camera to monitor the driver's gaze, automatically dimming the passenger's screen if it detects distraction.
Availability
The iX5 is set to reach the market in the first quarter of 2027, with a starting price of $79,800. By integrating such advanced technology into its most iconic nameplate, BMW is positioning the iX5 as an aspirational upgrade rather than just an electric alternative, setting a new standard for the luxury SUV segment.
