God of War Laufey: Everything We Know About the New PS5 Exclusive

A Bold New Direction for the God of War Saga

The legendary journey of Kratos may have reached a poignant conclusion in God of War Ragnarök, but Santa Monica Studio is proving that the franchise still has plenty of stories to tell. Following the release of the 2D prequel God of War Sons of Sparta in February 2025, Sony has officially unveiled God of War Laufey. This upcoming title marks a daring shift in the series, moving the spotlight from the Ghost of Sparta to a new protagonist, promising a fresh perspective on the mythic realms.

Plot and Setting: A Journey Through the Empyrean

Unlike previous entries, God of War Laufey does not serve as a direct sequel to Ragnarök. Instead, it takes place concurrently with the events of the 2018 God of War. The story centers on Faye, the warrior and wife of Kratos, immediately following her death.

Faye finds herself transported to the Empyrean, a celestial afterlife designed for the gods. Upon arriving, she discovers that the precautions she painstakingly put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now under threat. To safeguard her family, Faye must navigate this vast, dangerous landscape, battling ruthless deities and mastering volatile magic to find a way back to the influence of the living world.

New Cast and Returning Icons

The game features a high-profile voice and motion-capture cast. Deborah Ann Woll (known for Daredevil) returns to bring Faye to life. Joining her are Jack Quaid (The Boys), who portrays the mysterious Phranque, and Perlina Lau (Creamerie) as Rue.

While Kratos is not the primary protagonist, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Creative Director Cory Barlog have confirmed that Kratos is not gone for good. While he is expected to appear primarily as a vision or spiritual guide in Laufey, the studio emphasizes that "there will always be games about Kratos," ensuring his eventual return in future projects.

Gameplay Evolution: Magic and Mobility

God of War Laufey maintains the core identity of the series as a third-person action-adventure with beat 'em up elements and light RPG systems. However, Santa Monica Studio is introducing several key gameplay innovations:

  • Jötnar Magic: Players will leverage the unique powers of the Giants to manipulate the environment and combat enemies.
  • Aerial Combat: Drawing inspiration from the original Greek trilogy, the combat is becoming more vertical and dynamic.
  • Return of Free Jumping: For the first time since God of War Ascension, players will once again have the ability to jump freely, significantly altering exploration and combat pacing.
  • New Arsenal: New weapons tailored to Faye's fighting style will replace the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos.

A Multiverse of Mythologies

In a groundbreaking move, God of War Laufey will be the first title in the series to blend multiple mythologies into a single experience. Because the Empyrean acts as a hub for fallen gods from across the globe, the game will feature entities from Egyptian, Chinese, Japanese, and Mongolian lore.

Confirmed adversaries include Begtsé, the Mongolian god of war, and Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war. Additionally, the game introduces enigmatic beings like Phranque, a cosmic cube, and Rue, the enchanted ribbon guardian of a legendary sword.

Release Details and Technical Specifications

Platform Exclusivity: The game is being developed as a strict exclusive for the PS5 and PS5 Pro. In a shift in corporate strategy, Sony has confirmed that there will be no PS4 version and no immediate PC port.

PS5 Pro Enhancements: While specific details are scarce, the game is expected to leverage PSSR 2 technology to provide superior resolution and smoother frame rates on the Pro hardware.

Release Window: While an official date has not been set, industry rumors suggest a launch in early 2027. Standard editions are expected to follow the modern pricing trend of approximately €79.99 / $69.99, with physical copies expected to be available before Sony's rumored shift toward fully digital libraries in 2028.
