Apple Extends iCloud Shared Album Functionality to Android and Windows Users

The New Era of Shared Albums

iCloud Shared Albums have served as a useful tool for Apple users to congregate their media, allowing up to five people to add and edit photos and videos in a single shared space. Previously, while non-Apple users could view these albums via a web browser, their interaction was limited. With the latest update, Android and Windows users will be granted full access, enabling them to actively contribute to these albums as if they were using an native iOS device.

Improved Quality and Collaboration

Perhaps most importantly for photography enthusiasts, these upgraded albums will support the sharing of full-resolution, uncompressed files. This ensures that the quality of photos and videos remains pristine, regardless of the operating system used by the contributors. This represents a substantial improvement over the older, more restrictive sharing methods.

Important Considerations: The Storage Trade-off

While this is a welcome feature for cross-platform groups, there is a catch. Unlike the previous version of Shared Albums, where content did not count toward individual iCloud storage limits, the new upgraded albums will consume storage space. The burden of this storage allocation falls on the person who creates and 'upgrades' the album. Consequently, users will need to be mindful, especially when friends or family members upload large 4K video files.
